Notes from
first city fellowship
Welcome to our weekly Notes from First City Fellowship! We pray this section is helpful
in keeping you informed on what’s happening here in First City.
With all the talk on “lowering the temperature” of our discussions and “tamping down the rhetoric”, do you ever wonder what that looks like? How do I do that without being run over or humiliated by someone who’s willing to say whatever they need to say to “win” an argument or discussion?
The truth is, we don’t have to win every discussion and we don’t have to embarrass ourselves trying. Think about it for a second…….do you really need to convince everyone you talk to that your position or viewpoint is right? And does using harsh and angry words or tones make your position stronger or more reasonable? The answer to both questions is “no”.
If we want to see the greatest example of staying calm while speaking truth, we can simply look at how Jesus faced people who hated His teaching so much that they actually screamed for His death and lied about Him to get Him sentenced to death. It’s an amazing example and an amazing encouragement of how to demonstrate dignified and honorable character.
If you’d like to learn more about the examples Jesus set for us or if you’d like to talk about how you can have more peace in our currently supercharged environment, we’d love to sit down and talk with you about it. Just message us here or send us an email and we’ll set up a time and place to talk. We hope to get a chance to see you soon.
Is there something you’d like prayer for, but you aren’t sure how to ask? Don’t worry about how to ask, just ask……right here on the website. We’d love to hear from you and pray for you.
Do you ever wonder what it means when someone talks about being a Christian? We hear the term regularly, and there are certainly a lot of perceptions and thoughts about what a Christian is……but what does it mean to say “I’m a Christan”?
The answer is actually pretty simple. A Christian is someone who follows Jesus Christ. That’s it. It’s someone who has placed their faith in what Jesus did on the cross to save them from all those times we disobeyed God and then follows what Jesus taught us. It doesn’t mean a Christian is perfect or is better than others – they’re not. It just means they follow Jesus and work to grow a closer relationship with Him.
This may seem like a strange explanation of a Christian or a strange relationship to have with Jesus, but it’s the truth and it is truly life changing and life giving. If you would like to know more about what it means to be a Christian and how you can become one, we’d love to sit down and talk to you! Just send us an email or message us here on the website and we’ll set up a time to talk. We really look forward to hearing from you!
We had another great morning with our Prayer Table at the City Market last Saturday! It is so encouraging and exciting to be able to engage people in conversation, learn something about them, and pray for or with them each month! We hope to get a chance to see even more folks at future city markets!

Do you ever wish you had more patience? If you think about it, impatience is a characteristic that leads to a lot of the frustration and conflict we experience in our lives. We want someone to move faster, or we want to find the item we’re looking for at the store right away. But when that doesn’t happen the way we wanted, we get impatient. We tend to get frustrated and even angry because our drive-through, microwave, streaming, on-demand world has told us we shouldn’t have to wait for anyone or anything,
But that expectation simply isn’t grounded in reality because it puts us and our needs first……above anyone else’s needs. When we become impatient, we stop considering others, even the ones we love. Impatience doesn’t bring us any joy and it doesn’t bring us any peace – it only brings conflict, raised blood pressure, and sometimes raised voices. So, to lower the stress level and help us consider others rather than just ourselves, we need patience.
Did you know that one of the gifts God gives us when we turn to Him is patience? God actually teaches us and guides us to be more patient, which is a huge gift in our lives. If you’d like to learn more about having more patience, just email, text, or call us – we’d love to sit down and spend some time with you!
We’ll be back out with our Prayer Table at the City Market this Saturday (July 13th) from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and are looking forward to meeting, praying for, and having some more great conversations with people. Come on out to Haymarket Square this Saturday morning – we’d love to see you!

As you look at the name of our church, you might wonder why we called it First City Fellowship and not First City Church. Certainly, there’s nothing wrong with calling it First City Church, but we wanted our name to reflect that we do more than meet once a week, which is a common understanding of what a church is. With a “fellowship”, we bring in the aspects of friendships, close personal relationships, and a group that cares for each other.
Did you know that when the Bible uses the word “church”, it never talks about a building? Every time the Bible uses the word “church”, it’s referring to a group of people. So while it would have been perfectly fine to call ourselves First City Church, the name First City Fellowship simply described the sense of community, friendship, and care we work to set as a local body of people
If you’d like to talk about finding real fellowship – or would like to join us in that fellowship – just email, text, or call us – we’d love to sit down and spend some time with you!

quote of the week
“Do you feel more loved when God makes much of you
or do you feel more loved when God,
at the cost of His Son,
allows you to make much of Him.”
― John Piper
